The High Court in London has ordered the ruler of Dubai to pay his ex-wife and their two children more than $ 734 million, according to court documents released Tuesday that said he posed a “serious risk” to their safety.
The documents detail a custody settlement, dated November 19, which appears to be one of the largest in British history, amounting to around $ 734 million. The settlement also appears to resolve a two-year legal battle between the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, and Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, who fled to London in 2019, seeking political asylum and divorce. .
Lawyers representing Sheikh Mohammed and Princess Haya did not immediately return requests for comment on Tuesday.
The Princess’s flight from Dubai, the largest city in the United Arab Emirates, followed unsuccessful efforts to leave two of Sheikh Mohammed’s daughters from another marriage, Sheikha Shamsa al-Maktoum and Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed al- Maktoum.
Sheikh Mohammed’s representatives denied that the women were being held against their will.
In October, court documents revealed that Sheikh Mohammed used high-tech software purchased from an Israeli company to hack the cell phones of his ex-wife, two of his lawyers and three other associates.
In court documents released this week, Judge Philip Moor cited the hacking and “its kidnapping of Sheikha Shamsa and Sheikha Latifa” among other factors as saying Sheikh Mohammed “poses a serious risk” to the princess and their children. .
Judge Moor said Princess Haya and the children, given their status, would have needed security anyway, but stressed that “they are particularly vulnerable and need waterproof security to keep them safe. safety and security in this country “.
The judge added that Princess Haya was not asking for “a reward for herself other than for security” and compensation for items she had lost following the end of her marriage.
The court ordered Sheikh Mohammed to pay a lump sum of £ 251.5million, or around $ 330million, to Princess Haya, who was the most visible of the Sheikh’s six wives. Documents indicated that the money was to be used for the upkeep of her British homes, her future security, and what she was owed for jewelry and racehorses.
Sheikh Mohammed also has to pay more than £ 3million for the education of the couple’s two children, plus around £ 10million in arrears, according to court documents.
Payments will be secured by a £ 290million security held by HSBC Bank. The final sum of more than half a billion pounds was significantly lower than the 1.4 billion pounds requested by lawyers for Princess Haya in October, according to court documents.
The divorce case of Princess Haya and Sheikh Mohammad has provided insight into the life of Dubai royalty.
