36-year-old NYC firefighter Derek Floyd passed away on April 15 due to cardiac arrest, just four months after being laid off by the city.

Floyd’s dismissal was part of a larger initiative to reduce staff and reallocate funding for housing and services for the influx of migrants in New York City.

Floyd, who had been a firefighter for over a decade, was the primary provider for his family and leaves behind a wife and two children.

His untimely death has raised questions about the city’s handling of the migrant crisis and the impact of budget cuts on essential services like the fire department.

As the family mourns their loss, the community has come together to support them through a GoFundMe campaign and an outpouring of condolences.

The tragic circumstances surrounding Floyd’s passing serve as a sobering reminder of the far-reaching effects of policy decisions and the importance of prioritizing the well-being of those who serve our communities.
