A heartless Ohio mother, Tamara Banks (41), was sentenced to up to 13.5 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter in the death of her daughter, Karmity Hoeb (4).

Karmity tragically passed away in January 2022 from complications related to untreated type‑1 diabetes. Prosecutors described the case as “one of the most tragic” they’d encountered.

Horrific Neglect Leads to Child’s Death

Karmity’s short life was marked by severe neglect. Despite showing signs of illness, she was denied proper nutrition and medical care. An investigation revealed Karmity’s teeth were severely damaged due to a constant diet of Mountain Dew administered through a baby bottle.

A single can of Mountain Dew contains nearly 50 grams of sugar, far exceeding healthy limits for a young child.

Parents Prioritized Themselves Over Child’s Needs

Disturbingly, evidence showed Banks prioritized her own health needs over her daughter’s. She refilled prescriptions and scheduled doctor visits for herself while ignoring Karmity’s deteriorating condition. This pattern of neglect extended to other children in the household.

One son, also suffering from undiagnosed diabetes, fell into a coma. Despite his recovery, Banks failed to take him for follow-up appointments.

Both Parents Held Accountable

Karmity’s father, Christopher Hoeb (53), also pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and awaits sentencing in June 2024. Prosecutors condemned both parents for failing to provide basic medical care, highlighting that Karmity’s death was entirely preventable.

A Heartbreaking Deception

Adding another layer of tragedy, Karmity’s online obituary, written by Banks and Hoeb, portrays a happy childhood filled with love. This facade stands in stark contrast to the documented abuse and neglect.
