In a dra­mat­ic turn of events, a bur­glary sus­pect was fatal­ly shot after open­ing fire on deputies in a McDon­ald’s park­ing lot in Col­fax on Thurs­day night, leav­ing a Plac­er Coun­ty sher­if­f’s deputy injured.

Accord­ing to a news release by the Plac­er Coun­ty Sher­if­f’s Office, the inci­dent unfold­ed when deputies patrolling the area near the 500 block of North Auburn Street came across a van match­ing the descrip­tion of a vehi­cle con­nect­ed to a bur­glary that took place the pre­vi­ous day. 

Upon approach­ing the van, deputies encoun­tered a white male adult in his 30s who imme­di­ate­ly dis­played noncompliance.

In an attempt to de-esca­late the sit­u­a­tion, the deputies employed var­i­ous tech­niques, but the sus­pect unex­pect­ed­ly fired at them. 

As a result, one deputy was struck and sub­se­quent­ly evac­u­at­ed by the oth­er offi­cers present at the scene. The injured deputy’s iden­ti­ty has not been dis­closed, and his con­di­tion has sta­bi­lized after receiv­ing crit­i­cal care at a hospital.

In response to the sus­pec­t’s attack, deputies returned fire, lead­ing to the fatal shoot­ing. The sus­pect was lat­er found deceased.

The Plac­er Coun­ty Sher­if­f’s Office Homi­cide Bureau detec­tives will be con­duct­ing an inter­nal inves­ti­ga­tion in line with the agen­cy’s policy. 

Addi­tion­al­ly, the deputies involved in the shoot­ing have been placed on admin­is­tra­tive leave. The Plac­er Coun­ty Dis­trict Attor­ney’s Office will also review the incident.
