Tragic Loss at Shawnee Mission Northwest
A 15-year-old football player from Shawnee Mission Northwest High School has tragically passed away after a medical emergency that occurred during off-season conditioning on Wednesday.
The student, identified as Ovet Gomez Regalado, was rushed to a local hospital but sadly died on Friday.
Grief and Support in the Community
The Shawnee Mission Northwest community is in mourning over this devastating loss. Principal Dr. Lisa Gruman acknowledged the difficulty of handling the death of someone so young, stating, “Death is always difficult to handle, but particularly so when someone so young dies.”
The school district is providing support to students and families during this time. Counselors were available at the school on Friday and will also be there on Monday to offer support.
The Shawnee Mission Northwest Football Booster Club also expressed their condolences, saying, “Our football family has suffered the tragic loss of one our own.”
Importance of Emotional Support
Therapist Michael Sheehan emphasizes the importance of providing emotional support during this difficult time. He advises parents to be present for their children, allowing them to express their feelings and not putting a timeline on the grieving process.
“What’s most important for our kids, especially, is to be present with them, to be with them in their discomfort and in their grief, and that it’s okay to feel that way,” Sheehan said.
Regular football practice at Shawnee Mission Northwest is set to begin on Monday, but the community will continue to mourn the loss of this young life and support one another through the healing process.
