In a trou¬≠bling turn of events, six squat¬≠ters have tak¬≠en over a sub¬≠ur¬≠ban Geor¬≠gia home and gone as far as help¬≠ing them¬≠selves to their neigh¬≠bor‚Äôs car while they were on vacation.

The Background of the Incident

The six intruders moved into the empty home located at 4300 Caveat Court on Christmas Day. Over the following months, they became a nuisance to the neighborhood, causing concern among local residents. It was revealed that the squatters had broken into another vacant home in the area and had stolen a car belonging to the homeowners who were away on vacation.

The Impact on the Community

The presence of squatters in the neighborhood raised significant safety concerns among residents. The Hampton Oaks Homeowners Association president, Mel Keyton, expressed frustration over the situation. He highlighted the issue of people buying homes and failing to fulfill their obligations, leaving properties vacant and vulnerable to squatters. Keyton emphasized the need for increased awareness and action to prevent such incidents.

Apprehension and Police Action

The police were able to track down the squatters after discovering the stolen car in their driveway. On Saturday, the authorities apprehended the six individuals and placed them under arrest. The association’s vice president, Kendra Snorton, expressed relief at the resolution of the situation, but also emphasized the unease that residents felt knowing that unidentified individuals were living amongst them.

Squatter Reform Act

The incident occurred shortly after the signing of the Georgia Squatter Reform Act by Governor Brian Kemp. This act grants homeowners more authority to evict unwanted squatters. The hope is that such legislation will prevent future situations like this and provide homeowners with the necessary tools to protect their properties.
