The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), the largest Protestant denomination in the US, has sparked controversy by expelling a historic Virginia church, First Baptist Church of Alexandria. The move stems from the church’s disagreement with the SBC’s stance on women in pastoral roles.

At their annual meeting, messengers (voting representatives) overwhelmingly voted (6,759 to 563) to remove First Baptist Church. The church, a member since the 19th century and a major contributor to SBC causes, affirms women can serve as senior pastors.

This decision aligns with the recommendation of the SBC’s credentials committee. They believe the church’s “egalitarian beliefs regarding the office of pastor” contradict the SBC’s statement of faith, the Baptist Faith and Message, which restricts pastors to men.

Despite the disagreement, First Baptist Church’s pastor, Robert Stephens, emphasized their 44-year history of women in ministry and their desire to maintain a positive relationship with SBC churches holding different views.

The expulsion precedes a vote on a proposed amendment formally barring churches with women pastors from the SBC. This amendment received preliminary approval in 2023.

The SBC’s actions highlight a growing internal conflict over women’s ordination as senior pastors, an issue gaining acceptance in many Christian denominations. This expulsion underscores the deep divide within the SBC on this topic.

The SBC’s stance on women in ministry leadership remains a contentious debate. The proposed amendment vote is expected to signal the denomination’s future direction on this long-standing issue.
