Four instructors from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, were injured in a stabbing attack on June 10, 2024, while visiting Beishan Park in Jilin City, China. The instructors were part of an ongoing educational partnership between Cornell College and Beihua University.

College Partnership Visit Turns Violent:

According to Cornell College President Jonathan Brand, the instructors were with a Beihua University faculty member during a daytime visit to the park when the attack occurred. There were no students involved.

Details of the Attack Emerge:

Reports from lawmakers and video footage indicate the four instructors were “brutally stabbed.” Thankfully, family members have confirmed all instructors are receiving treatment at a nearby hospital, although their current conditions remain unknown.

U.S. Response and Travel Advisory:

The U.S. State Department is actively monitoring the situation. A Level 3 travel advisory was previously issued for mainland China due to concerns over detentions and exit restrictions. This incident may prompt further actions by the department.

Uncertainties and Community Response:

The motive for the attack and whether it was targeted remain unclear. The Cornell College community is understandably shaken, and the school is providing support to the injured instructors. Local lawmakers have condemned the attack and vowed to ensure the safe return of the Iowans.
