In a Manhattan courtroom on Tuesday, adult film star Stormy Daniels testified in detail about an alleged sexual encounter with former President Donald Trump in 2006. Daniels’ testimony is a key part of the criminal trial against Trump over hush money payments made during his 2016 presidential campaign.

According to reporters present in the courtroom, Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, told the jury about meeting Trump at a Lake Tahoe golf tournament in 2006, where she was promoting an adult film company. Daniels said Trump invited her to dinner in his hotel suite, where he answered the door in silk pajamas.

Daniels testified that after dinner, Trump stripped down to his underwear and positioned himself between her and the door when she tried to leave, saying she didn’t say no “because I didn’t say anything at all.” She alleged that they then had sex, with Trump telling her not to worry about his wife Melania.

The former president, who is the presumed 2024 Republican presidential nominee, has denied the encounter with Daniels. However, prosecutors are aiming to prove that Trump covered up a $130,000 payment to Daniels to keep her silent during the 2016 campaign.

Trump faces 34 felony charges for allegedly disguising those hush money payments, reimbursed to his former lawyer Michael Cohen, as “legal expenses.” The Trump Organization eventually paid Cohen $420,000 to account for taxes and a bonus.

Daniels testified that she stopped taking Trump’s calls in 2007 after he couldn’t guarantee her an appearance on his TV show “The Apprentice.” She said her publicist unsuccessfully tried to sell her story in 2015 after Trump announced his presidential run, but interest only heated up in 2016 after the infamous “Access Hollywood” tape surfaced.

“My motivation wasn’t money. It was to get the story out,” Daniels testified, according to reporters. She eventually received $96,000 of the $130,000 payment, after her manager and lawyer took fees.

Trump’s defense lawyers moved for a mistrial, arguing Daniels’ testimony went beyond what was necessary. While the judge denied the motion, he acknowledged some details would have been “better left unsaid.” Trump’s team is expected to continue cross-examining Daniels on Wednesday.

This is the first of four criminal cases against Trump to reach the trial stage. The former president, who maintains his innocence, responded on his Truth Social platform by calling the prosecution’s case “NO CASE” and demanding a mistrial.
