An Ohio teenager was recently given a prison term for her role in a deadly vehicle collision that killed her boyfriend and another passenger.
19-year-old Mackenzie Shirilla received a sentence of 15 years to life after being found guilty on multiple charges including murder.
The incident occurred in July 2022 when Shirilla was driving a car with her boyfriend Dominic Russo, 20, and their friend Davion Flanagan, 19. According to authorities, Shirilla lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a brick building going approximately 100 mph. Both Russo and Flanagan tragically did not survive the high speed impact.
During the subsequent trial, prosecutors argued that Shirilla had intentionally crashed the car in order to end her relationship with Russo. Surveillance footage was presented that appeared to show Shirilla accelerating directly into the structure. Toxicology reports also indicated she had THC in her system above the legal driving limit.
When delivering the sentence, Judge Nancy Margaret Russo said the crash was a “mission” carried out with “precision” rather than a reckless accident. Shirilla maintained her innocence and apologized to the victims’ families in court. She plans to appeal the guilty verdict.
The tragic event understandably left both families grieving the loss of the two young men. Memorial fundraisers were organized online to help cover funeral costs. Traffic safety experts caution all drivers to stay focused, obey speed limits, and avoid impaired operation to prevent further loss of life on our roadways.
