A Texas woman, Kristie Periera (32), has been left reeling after a local rescue shelter mistakenly surrendered her puppy for adoption instead of euthanasia.

The incident raises concerns about communication and transparency within animal rescue organizations.

Periera adopted a hound mix puppy named Beau in 2022 for $450. However, within weeks, she became concerned about his health. Veterinarians suspected a neurological condition, with potential treatment costs exceeding $12,000 and a low chance of success.

Faced with this heartbreaking situation and encouraged by shelter staff who presented euthanasia as the “best option,” Periera made the agonizing decision to surrender Beau in March 2023.

A year later, Periera was astonished to discover Beau’s picture on the shelter’s adoption website, listed under a new name, Amos Hart.

Upon contacting the shelter, Periera learned that further tests revealed Beau had a liver problem, not a neurological one. The shelter funded a successful $7,000 surgery through a GoFundMe campaign and rehabilitated Beau.

Periera is understandably outraged. Not only was she kept in the dark about Beau’s true condition and lifesaving surgery, but the shelter also denied her request to reclaim him, citing a policy against returning surrendered pets.
