A heartbreaking incident occurred in Douglas, Georgia, where a 2‑year-old boy, Nakyzi Odums, accidentally shot himself in the chest while left alone in a car in a Walmart parking lot.

Nakyzi’s parents, Sam Odums and Laileighauna Parks, were shopping for fireworks just feet away when the tragedy took place on July 3.

Witnesses reported hearing a gunshot and seeing the parents rush back to the car, where they found their son had shot himself.

Nakyzi was immediately rushed to a local hospital and then transferred to a trauma center in Jacksonville, Florida, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries on Saturday.

The Douglas Police Department launched an investigation to determine how the young child got hold of the gun and the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

While Georgia law generally allows individuals to carry loaded guns in their vehicles, authorities have emphasized the importance of properly securing firearms when children are present.

Nakyzi’s grandmother has set up a GoFundMe page to help the parents cover the costs of his burial and allow them time to grieve.

The community is mourning the loss of this young life, and the incident serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of firearm safety and supervision when children are involved.
