A MaryÂland mom has been left in anguish after her two-year-old son was hit and killed by a car after he ran out into the road. Cody Aguilar Gomez lost his life on TuesÂday in what police called a âhorÂrifÂic and tragÂic accident.â
Momentary Distraction Proves Deadly
The youngÂsterâs mom, KarÂla Gomez, had set him on the curb momenÂtarÂiÂly while she got her othÂer child out of the car when the todÂdler made a break for the road. Cody was struck by the vehiÂcle just before 4 p.m. and proÂnounced dead at the scene.
Heartbroken Community Response
âMy heart is heavy because the realÂiÂty is itâs every parÂenÂtâs worst nightÂmare thatâs come true for the Gomez famÂiÂly,â said AnnapoÂlis Police Chief Ed JackÂson. âI canât imagÂine the pain that theyâre going through now. Most of us canât imagÂine as we go throughÂout our day that we would lose our two-year-old child.â
No Criminal Intent from Driver
The driÂver of the car was not iniÂtialÂly aware they had hit someÂone, but came forÂward to the police after learnÂing of the inciÂdent. After conÂsultÂing with the Anne ArunÂdel CounÂty Stateâs AttorÂneyâs Office, police deterÂmined there was no crimÂiÂnal intent from the driver.

In a stateÂment, AnnapoÂlis MayÂor Gavin BuckÂley expressed his sadÂness over the death of âthis bright, young lightâ and offered his conÂdoÂlences to the Gomez famÂiÂly. He also praised the motorist for comÂing forÂward and âdoing the right thing.â
