Tragic Accident Leaves Toddler Dead After Mother’s Momentary Lapse

Every Parent’s Nightmare

A Mary­land mom has been left in anguish after her two-year-old son was hit and killed by a car after he ran out into the road. Cody Aguilar Gomez lost his life on Tues­day in what police called a “hor­rif­ic and trag­ic accident.”

Momentary Distraction Proves Deadly

The young­ster’s mom, Kar­la Gomez, had set him on the curb momen­tar­i­ly while she got her oth­er child out of the car when the tod­dler made a break for the road. Cody was struck by the vehi­cle just before 4 p.m. and pro­nounced dead at the scene.

Heartbroken Community Response

“My heart is heavy because the real­i­ty is it’s every par­en­t’s worst night­mare that’s come true for the Gomez fam­i­ly,” said Annapo­lis Police Chief Ed Jack­son. “I can’t imag­ine the pain that they’re going through now. Most of us can’t imag­ine as we go through­out our day that we would lose our two-year-old child.”

No Criminal Intent from Driver

The dri­ver of the car was not ini­tial­ly aware they had hit some­one, but came for­ward to the police after learn­ing of the inci­dent. After con­sult­ing with the Anne Arun­del Coun­ty State’s Attor­ney’s Office, police deter­mined there was no crim­i­nal intent from the driver.

Condolences from Local Officials

In a state­ment, Annapo­lis May­or Gavin Buck­ley expressed his sad­ness over the death of “this bright, young light” and offered his con­do­lences to the Gomez fam­i­ly. He also praised the motorist for com­ing for­ward and “doing the right thing.”

Heartbroken Community Mourns Loss

Flow­ers and ted­dy bears have been left in mem­o­ry of Cody, with locals say­ing the com­mu­ni­ty has been left “dev­as­tat­ed” by the tragedy. A GoFundMe has been set up to help the fam­i­ly with funer­al expenses.
