The violence plaguing Mexico’s upcoming elections has reached a devastating new level. In a shocking turn of events, a mayoral candidate and five other people were killed when gunfire erupted at a campaign rally in the southern state of Chiapas.

According to state prosecutors, the deadly shooting occurred late Thursday in the rural town of La Concordia, just 80 miles from the Guatemalan border. The area is notorious as a major smuggling route for drugs and migrants, with the country’s two dominant drug cartels fighting for control.

Author¬≠i¬≠ties have revealed that a young girl was among the six vic¬≠tims killed in the hail of bul¬≠lets. Two oth¬≠ers were also wound¬≠ed in the attack. ‚ÄúA con¬≠fronta¬≠tion broke out between armed civil¬≠ians dur¬≠ing a polit¬≠i¬≠cal cam¬≠paign event,‚ÄĚ the pros¬≠e¬≠cu¬≠tors‚Äô state¬≠ment read.

It remains unclear whether the mayoral candidate, Lucero López Maza, was the intended target of the assault. Shootings have become an all-too-common occurrence in the region, often linked to the ongoing turf war between the rival cartels.

This tragic incident comes just days after 11 people were killed in separate mass shootings in a nearby village. With Mexico’s July 2 elections fast approaching, the country has already seen around 20 candidates killed so far this year amid the escalating political violence.

The brazen attack at the campaign rally is a sobering reminder of the dangers facing those who dare to run for office in Mexico’s deadliest regions. As the nation grapples with the fallout from this latest tragedy, the call for meaningful action to address the root causes of this endemic violence grows ever louder.
