Tragedy in Nashville Lake
A mothÂer of three drowned while tryÂing to save her 12-year-old daughÂter in a TenÂnessee lake, a tragedy that has left her famÂiÂly heartÂbroÂken and highÂlightÂed the imporÂtance of mulÂtiÂlinÂgual safeÂty measures.
AmarÂilÂia âLileanaâ Vamaca, 38, died after jumpÂing into PerÂcy Priest Lake in Nashville on August 4th to assist her strugÂgling daughter.
Her husÂband, MarÂtin AmbroÂsio, was swimÂming in a difÂferÂent part of the lake and rushed to help, but by the time he reached his wife, she had already entered the water.
Language Barrier Prevents Heeding of Warning Signs
The famÂiÂly, who only speaks SpanÂish, was unable to read the warnÂing signs postÂed around the lake about the danÂgerÂous waters.
AmbroÂsio expressed his regret, sayÂing, âWe donât know how to read EngÂlish [and] we didÂnât see any signs.â He believes that havÂing clear sigÂnage in both EngÂlish and SpanÂish could have made a difference.
Heartbreak and Advocacy for Change
Vamacaâs sudÂden death has been incredÂiÂbly difÂfiÂcult for her famÂiÂly, with AmbroÂsio describÂing her as âan open perÂson, smilÂing, hapÂpy, a jokÂerâ who loved makÂing friends. The famÂiÂly has turned to their faith to find comÂfort in the wake of this tragedy.
AmbroÂsio has used this devÂasÂtatÂing inciÂdent as an opporÂtuÂniÂty to advoÂcate for improved safeÂty meaÂsures to proÂtect the SpanÂish-speakÂing comÂmuÂniÂty. He hopes that by sharÂing his stoÂry, he can preÂvent simÂiÂlar tragedies from occurÂring in the future.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help covÂer the costs of returnÂing Vamacaâs body to her native Guatemala, and the comÂmuÂniÂty has ralÂlied around the famÂiÂly durÂing this difÂfiÂcult time.
