Edgar Ordonez, a 33-year-old NYPD recruit, suffered a medical episode, likely related to heat exhaustion, at the Rodman’s Neck firing range in the Bronx on a sweltering summer day. He was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center but could not be saved, passing away just a week before he was set to graduate from the police academy.

Tributes and Condolences

Police Commissioner Edward Caban expressed his condolences, describing Ordonez as a “fallen brother” and a “beacon of joy and positive energy” for his fellow recruits. PBA President Patrick Hendry also paid tribute to Ordonez, highlighting his drive and determination to become a New York City police officer.

Possible Heat-Related Incidents

In a separate incident, also potentially heat-related, an NYPD officer fainted and apparently struck their head at the Fort Totten facility in Queens on the same day. The condition of this officer is still unclear, as the NYPD continues to investigate the matter.

Weather Conditions and Concerns

The tragic incident occurred on a day when a heat advisory was in effect in the city, with temperatures reaching 86 degrees Fahrenheit and a heat index making it feel closer to 100 degrees outside. The extreme weather conditions likely contributed to the medical episodes experienced by the NYPD personnel.

Tragic Loss for the NYPD Community

The death of Edgar Ordonez, just days before he was set to join the ranks of the NYPD, has left the department and the community in mourning. As they grieve this “unimaginable loss,” the NYPD and the city must come together to support Ordonez’s family, friends, and fellow officers during this difficult time.
