A Lake County community mourns after a high school senior lost his life in a shocking accident. Last Monday morning, 17-year-old Sherman Vannoy approached an intersection near Lake Minneola High on his bicycle. As the star athlete prepared to cross, a 78-year-old school bus driver attempted a left turn into the campus.
Witnesses say the vehicle swerved in an attempt to avoid Sherman but still made impact. The front of the large bus collided with the teenager and dragged him along before crashing through a stop sign and fence. Emergency responders rushed to provide medical aid but the serious injuries proved fatal. Sherman tragically succumbed at a local hospital.
Students and faculty reeled from the devastating news. Sherman, though not on the football roster, had touched many lives at the school. At that night’s game, both teams united to honor his memory with orange clothing and a moment of silence. Meanwhile, grief counselors supported those struggling with the unexpected loss.
While the cause remains under investigation, one fact is clear — a young life ended far too soon. Now a community pulls together to comfort Sherman’s grieving family through fundraising and prayers and remembers a vibrant senior stolen away in an instant. As hundreds process the heartbreaking tragedy, many question how this accident could have been avoided.
