A US Army veteran has been hailed a hero after sacrificing himself to save his family from a powerful rip current at Nai Harn Beach in Phuket, Thailand.

James Everett du Bois, 49, was enjoying a Sunday afternoon swim with his Thai wife, Siriarmorn Phetarwut, 49, and their 3‑year-old son, Boonpat, when tragedy struck. Around 4:50 pm, a strong current swept the family away from the shore. While Mrs. Phetarwut managed to return to safety, Mr. du Bois was tragically pulled out to sea.

Despite extensive search efforts, Mr. du Bois’ body has not been recovered. Rawai Mayor Arun Soros stated, “The wife and boy are now safe, but the American man is still missing. We are continuing to search for the man, but we believe he has drowned.”

A native of Shelby, Ohio, Mr. du Bois served as a US Army Supply Specialist from 1996 to 2022. Described by friends and family as a devoted husband and father, Mr. du Bois was known for his active social media presence, where he frequently shared updates about his family, particularly his son, whom he called his “joy, pride, motivation, best friend, and life.”

Importance of Water Safety:

This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of water safety, especially during Thailand’s monsoon season (June-December) when strong winds and dangerous currents are prevalent.

Nai Harn Beach had a yellow flag warning of potentially hazardous swimming conditions, while nearby beaches displayed red flags urging swimmers to stay out of the water entirely.
