In a shocking turn of events, an attempted coup in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has resulted in the death of one American and the arrest of several others, including the son of the purported coup leader. The failed putsch has shone a light on the United States’ longstanding involvement in the mineral-rich Central African nation.

The incident unfolded in the Congolese capital of Kinshasa, where a group of armed men, reportedly including three American citizens, attempted to overthrow the government of President Felix Tshisekedi. Chilling footage captured the moment two of the plotters were seized as they tried to flee the country across the Congo River, with one begging for his life as he lay bleeding in the street.

The younger of the two, 21-year-old Marcel Malanga, had accompanied his father, Christian Malanga, a former refugee from Utah, to lead the coup. Christian Malanga was killed during the clashes, while Marcel and two other American co-conspirators, Benjamin Zalman-Polun and an unidentified third individual, were arrested.

The failed coup attempt has fueled suspicions of U.S. involvement, given the country’s history of clandestine operations in the region. In the 1960s, the CIA was heavily involved in the Democratic Republic of Congo, then known as Zaire, working to keep a pro-Western government in power and even plotting to assassinate the country’s first democratically elected leader, Patrice Lumumba.

More recent¬≠ly, in 2020, a failed attempt to over¬≠throw Venezue¬≠lan Pres¬≠i¬≠dent Nico¬≠las Maduro was linked to a for¬≠mer U.S. Green Beret, Jor¬≠dan Goudreau, who claimed he had been entrust¬≠ed by the State Depart¬≠ment with ‚Äúpro¬≠tect¬≠ing oil inter¬≠ests‚ÄĚ in the country.

The DRC’s vast mineral wealth, including reserves of cobalt and other critical resources for the global green energy transition, has made the country a focus of international attention and competition. However, the country has also been plagued by violence and human rights abuses perpetrated by warring militias vying for control of these lucrative resources.

As the investigation into the failed coup attempt continues, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the enduring influence of the United States in the region. The outcome will be closely watched, as it could have far-reaching implications for the country’s fragile political landscape and the ongoing struggle for control over its natural resources.
