The fiancé of Madison Bergmann, a Wisconsin elementary school teacher arrested for allegedly “making out” with a fifth-grade student, has called off their wedding.

The revelation of Bergmann’s relationship with an 11-year-old student led to the decision, according to one of her fiancé’s friends.

The couple, Madison Bergmann and Sam Hickman, were scheduled to marry in July. However, their wedding page on the popular marriage website The Knot has been removed following Bergmann’s arrest. The mutual decision to postpone the wedding indefinitely has left Hickman “really upset and heartbroken,” the friend said.

Bergmann, 24, was arrested after the victim’s parents discovered text messages between her and their son. Charging documents state that the boy’s father confronted Bergmann at River Crest Elementary School with printouts of the conversations, prompting an investigation.

The text messages detailed intimate encounters between Bergmann and the student inside the classroom during lunch or after school. Bergmann also told the boy how much she enjoyed their physical contact and “making out.” Police found additional evidence in Bergmann’s bag, including a folder with the victim’s name containing handwritten notes about their kissing.

Bergmann allegedly obtained the student’s phone number from his mother in December when the family invited Bergmann to join them for winter break. This was the same month Bergmann became engaged to Hickman, as seen on her social media.

Madison Bergmann has since been placed on administrative leave by the Hudson School District and is barred from contacting any district students, parents, or staff. She is charged with one count of first-degree child sexual assault and has been released on a $25,000 signature bond.
