The House Ethics Com¬≠mit¬≠tee‚Äôs inves¬≠ti¬≠ga¬≠tion into Con¬≠gress¬≠man Matt Gaetz has tak¬≠en a dis¬≠turb¬≠ing turn, as a wit¬≠ness has report¬≠ed¬≠ly told the com¬≠mit¬≠tee that Gaetz paid her for sex.

According to multiple sources familiar with the committee’s work, investigators have interviewed at least half a dozen women who were witnesses in the long-running Justice Department sex trafficking probe into the Florida Republican.

In these closed-door interviews, which have not been previously reported, some of the witnesses have alleged that Gaetz paid them for sexual activities.

One woman in particular told the committee that a payment she received from Gaetz was specifically for sex, the sources said.

Other witnesses have claimed they were paid to attend parties that also featured Gaetz, as well as drugs and additional sexual activity. The committee has shown some witnesses Venmo payment records from Gaetz and asked if the payments were for sexual services.

Gaetz has vehe¬≠ment¬≠ly denied the alle¬≠ga¬≠tions against him, includ¬≠ing claims that he paid for sex. In the past, he has dis¬≠missed the accu¬≠sa¬≠tions by say¬≠ing ‚Äúsome¬≠one is try¬≠ing to recat¬≠e¬≠go¬≠rize my gen¬≠eros¬≠i¬≠ty to ex-girl¬≠friends as some¬≠thing more untoward.‚ÄĚ

The House Ethics Com¬≠mit¬≠tee launched its inves¬≠ti¬≠ga¬≠tion into Gaetz in 2021, but had pre¬≠vi¬≠ous¬≠ly put it on hold while the Jus¬≠tice Depart¬≠ment con¬≠duct¬≠ed its own probe. How¬≠ev¬≠er, the com¬≠mit¬≠tee has now resumed its work, sub¬≠poe¬≠naing mul¬≠ti¬≠ple wit¬≠ness¬≠es and issu¬≠ing 25 sub¬≠poe¬≠nas in total.

In a recent update, the com¬≠mit¬≠tee stat¬≠ed that it will con¬≠tin¬≠ue to review alle¬≠ga¬≠tions that Gaetz ‚Äúengaged in sex¬≠u¬≠al mis¬≠con¬≠duct and illic¬≠it drug use.‚ÄĚ The pan¬≠el is also look¬≠ing into claims that Gaetz ‚Äúsought to obstruct gov¬≠ern¬≠ment inves¬≠ti¬≠ga¬≠tions of his conduct.‚ÄĚ

Notably, the com¬≠mit¬≠tee has obtained Gaet¬≠z‚Äôs Ven¬≠mo records after issu¬≠ing a sub¬≠poe¬≠na to the pay¬≠ment platform.

This could provide crucial evidence as congressional investigators examine any payments the congressman may have made during his friendship with former tax collector Joel Greenberg, who was sentenced to 11 years in prison for sex trafficking a minor and other charges.

Green¬≠berg has been coop¬≠er¬≠at¬≠ing with the House Ethics Com¬≠mit¬≠tee‚Äôs probe, sources say, offer¬≠ing insight that could be dam¬≠ag¬≠ing to Gaetz.

The committee has also obtained a sworn statement from a woman who attended a 2017 party in Florida that Gaetz was allegedly present at.

As the inves¬≠ti¬≠ga¬≠tion con¬≠tin¬≠ues, the alle¬≠ga¬≠tions against Gaetz have the poten¬≠tial to fur¬≠ther tar¬≠nish the con¬≠gress¬≠man¬≠‚Äôs rep¬≠u¬≠ta¬≠tion and polit¬≠i¬≠cal standing.

The House Ethics Committee’s findings could have serious consequences for the Florida Republican, whose political future now hangs in the balance.
