Tragedy struck the Bad¬≠minton Asia Junior Cham¬≠pi¬≠onships in Indone¬≠sia as 17-year-old Chi¬≠nese play¬≠er Zhang Zhi¬≠jie col¬≠lapsed on court from car¬≠diac arrest dur¬≠ing a match.

The incident, which resulted in Zhang’s passing, has sparked a critical discussion about player safety and medical protocols in badminton.

Footage revealed a concerning 40-second delay before medical personnel reached Zhang. This has led the Badminton World Federation (BWF) to launch a full investigation in collaboration with Badminton Asia and the Indonesian badminton association (PBSI).

The BWF is reviewing all aspects, including whether proper medical procedures were followed and if the emergency response timeline met required standards.

Badminton legend Lee Chong Wei urged the BWF to examine match schedules, emphasizing the need for sufficient recovery time for athletes. Chinese media has also raised questions about the tournament’s emergency response preparedness.
