Ryan GarÂcia, the 24-year-old boxÂing pheÂnom, has sent shockÂwaves through the sport after takÂing to social media to announce his âoffiÂcial retirement.â
This comes amidst a series of perÂsonÂal and legal chalÂlenges for GarÂcia, includÂing a defamaÂtion lawÂsuit from Logan Paulâs brand, his mothÂerâs batÂtle with canÂcer, and a recent dopÂing violation.
GarÂciÂaâs announceÂment folÂlows a tumulÂtuous few months. In May, he was sued by Logan Paulâs enerÂgy drink comÂpaÂny, Prime, for alleged defamaÂtion. ShortÂly before, he revealed his mothÂerâs breast canÂcer diagnosis.
Adding to his strugÂgles, the VolÂunÂtary Anti-DopÂing AssoÂciÂaÂtion (VADA) disÂclosed that GarÂcia testÂed posÂiÂtive for Ostarine, a banned subÂstance, around the time of his April fight against Devin Haney. While GarÂcia won the fight, he couldÂnât claim the WBC lightÂweight title due to missÂing weight.
TakÂing to social media, GarÂcia ventÂed his frusÂtraÂtions: âMom has canÂcer. Iâm being sued. My supÂpleÂments were taintÂed. Going thru a divorce.â He conÂtinÂued, âBoxÂing will be alright withÂout me. But still sucks I was fun in the game. And it was fun to punch peoÂple. âŠIâm offiÂcialÂly retired.â
HowÂevÂer, the boxÂing world remains skepÂtiÂcal of GarÂciÂaâs retireÂment. At the peak of his career, with potenÂtialÂly lucraÂtive fights against Haney, GerÂvonÂta Davis, or othÂers on the horiÂzon, some conÂsidÂer this a rash decision.
