In a recent interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts, WNBA star Brittney Griner opened up about her mental health struggles during her 10-month detention in Russia.

Griner revealed that she contemplated suicide multiple times in the initial weeks of her imprisonment.

“I wanted to take my life more than once in the first weeks,” Griner shared. “I felt like leaving here so badly.”

She explained that part of her decision not to take her own life stemmed from fears that Russian authorities wouldn’t release her body to her family.

Griner’s interview marks the first time she has publicly discussed the details of her time in Russian jail, following her 2022 arrest on drug-related charges.

Her incarceration garnered global attention and spurred diplomatic negotiations between the United States and Russia, ultimately resulting in her release in a prisoner exchange.
