LivÂerÂpool legÂend Xabi AlonÂso has been appointÂed as BayÂer LevÂerkusenâs new manager.
The BunÂdesliÂga announced on wednesÂday that they had partÂed ways with GerÂard Seoan.
The forÂmer Real Sociedad B team manÂagÂer will join the GerÂman club after signÂing a conÂtract until 2024 to replace the Swiss coach.
âI know LevÂerkusen is a great club since I was in GerÂmany,â AlonÂso said on the clubâs website.
BayÂer 04 has always had great playÂers and I think the curÂrent team has many qualities. â
âDurÂing our disÂcusÂsions with the club, it quickÂly became clear that we were basiÂcalÂly purÂsuÂing ambiÂtious goals despite the curÂrent chalÂlengÂing circumstances.â
âI am very much lookÂing forÂward to this assignÂment and I am conÂfiÂdent that we will be able to delivÂer on this ambition.â
LevÂerkusen are curÂrentÂly 17th in the BunÂdesliÂga and have won just one of their first eight games.
ForÂmer LivÂerÂpool midÂfieldÂer AlonÂso led Sociedadâs secÂond team for three years.
Before that, he briefly manÂaged Real Madridâs U14s.
After retirÂing from footÂball the preÂviÂous year, he startÂed his coachÂing career in 2018.
After three seaÂsons at BayÂern Munich, he retired from playÂing and is a houseÂhold name in GerÂman football.
AlonÂso played 117 times for BayÂern, winÂning three BunÂdesliÂga titles and the DFB-Pokal.
Before that, he spent six years at Real Madrid, winÂning two troÂphies: La Liga, ChamÂpiÂons League and Copa del Rey.
But it was LivÂerÂpool who made his name known to the world via Real Sociedad.
AlonÂso was an Anfield favourite, from 2004 to 2009.
He made 210 appearÂances and scored 19 goals. His greatÂest achieveÂment was helpÂing LivÂerÂpool win the 2005 ChamÂpiÂons League final.
He also won the 2006 FA Cup Final with Liverpool.
In addiÂtion, he has 114 caps for his counÂtry and won the 2010 World Cup with Spain.
