Lionel MesÂsi has announced that 2022 will be his final World Cup.
The 35-year-old ArgenÂtinÂian is set to make his last World Cup appearÂance in Qatar.
The Qatar Games will be the fifth appearÂance since 2006.
âThis will defÂiÂniteÂly be my last World Cup,â he said. I have decided.
The Barcelona legÂend has six goals and five assists in 19 World Cup appearances.
MesÂsi has already fallÂen into disÂapÂpointÂment in the 2014 final, after GerÂmanyâs Mario Gotze scored a goal in extra time, endÂing his World Cup dreams.
The World Cup remains the only eluÂsive troÂphy in MesÂsiâs gloÂriÂous troÂphy cabinet.
MesÂsi and ArgentiÂna will enter the comÂpeÂtiÂtion as South AmerÂiÂcan chamÂpiÂons after beatÂing Brazil in last yearâs Copa America.
At club levÂel, MesÂsiâs future beyond next sumÂmer remains a mysÂtery, folÂlowÂing reports that he is close to returnÂing to Barcelona from Paris Saint-Germain.
But after a slump last year, MesÂsi looks to be back at his best this seaÂson, with a stagÂgerÂing eight goals and eight assists already.
It remains to be seen if this means that MesÂsi will retire from interÂnaÂtionÂal footÂball entireÂly, but he is not withÂout relucÂtance to retire from that part.
Back in 2016, he made a shock retireÂment after sufÂferÂing his fourth Copa AmerÂiÂca defeat.
HowÂevÂer, that deciÂsion was quickÂly overÂturned. WithÂout his leadÂerÂship and skill, the counÂtry is strugÂgling to cope.
