Luis MarÂquez, a forÂmer La Liga footÂballer, passed away this mornÂing at the young age of 51 due to cancer.
MarÂquez played for 11 years in the Real Betis first team, from 1989 to 2000, before briefly stints at Real ValÂladolÂid, PonÂteveÂdra and Real JaĂ©n.
He was known for his physÂiÂcal and techÂniÂcal resemÂblance to GerÂman midÂfieldÂer Bernd and was hailed as âthe best playÂer in the cup-winÂning youth team.â
MarÂquez helped Betis return to the top league of SpanÂish footÂball and was a regÂuÂlar starter in the UEFA Cup throughÂout the 1990s. He scored a specÂtacÂuÂlar volÂley from a corÂner durÂing the 1994/95 seaÂson against AtlĂ©tiÂco de Madrid, which is conÂsidÂered by many to be the best goal at the EstaÂdio BenÂiÂto VillamarĂn.
