Rory McIlroy filed for divorce from his wife Erica Stoll last week after seven years of marriage, and the news has come as a surprise to their inner circle.

However, a source has now revealed that the couple’s relationship had reached a “breaking point” prior to the divorce filing.

According to the insider, a major point of contention in the marriage was that Stoll felt “lonely” due to McIlroy’s demanding schedule on the PGA Tour. The source told Us Weekly, “Rory was a hard person to be married to.”

The couple, who share a 3‑year-old daughter named Poppy, had reportedly been “living separate lives” for the past two years as McIlroy traveled for tournaments. Stoll, who previously worked for the PGA, is said to have thrown herself into parenthood, making their daughter her top priority.

“She knew what she was getting into with his profession, but once they had Poppy, things really changed and she had a new perspective,” the insider added. “Erica was usually absent for most of his tournaments and was really focused on Poppy.”

The divorce filing, which came just three days before the PGA Championship, has sent shockwaves through the golf world. McIlroy, a four-time major champion, has not addressed the split directly, but his absence of his wedding ring at last week’s tournament was a telling sign.

This high-profile divorce highlights the challenges that professional athletes and their partners can face when balancing their careers and family life.

The “breaking point” in the McIlroy-Stoll marriage serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of maintaining a strong emotional connection, even in the face of demanding schedules and external pressures.
