According to the announcement, if Amazon didn’t charge for shipping, it could raise grocery prices.
But the reality is that customers will pay more anyway—many people can’t afford the $150 minimum these days, and those who can’t may not be able to use up everything they purchased before it spoils or becomes obsolete.
Amazon has already begun emailing customers about the new service fee, with some social media users pointing out how outrageous the price increase for free shipping is.
To get free shipping through Amazon Fresh, Prime members must spend at least $150 worth of groceries starting Tuesday, Feb. 28, the company explained to customers via email on Friday.
Otherwise, “orders $100-$150 will cost $3.95, orders $50-$100 will cost $6.95, and orders under $50 will cost $9.95,” Amazon says.
