Sony’s PlayStation 5 (PS5) has now sold over 38.4 million units since its launch in 2020, cementing its status as the company’s most successful gaming console. The PS5’s popularity continues to grow, with Sony announcing a record 6.3 million units sold in the second quarter of 2022, exceeding the 2 million units from the same period last year.
As a result, Sony expects cumulative PS5 sales for fiscal 2022 to reach an impressive 19.1 million units, surpassing the initial forecast of 18 million units.
While game sales and PlayStation Network subscribers have seen a slight decline, Sony’s Gaming & Network Services Division sales have still increased substantially from 665 billion yen to 1,730 billion yen. However, operating income decreased due to exchange rate changes.
Sony remains optimistic about future growth, projecting 7% higher revenue for fiscal 2023. The company also anticipates increased hardware sales, including peripherals such as the upcoming PlayStation VR2.
In addition to gaming success, Sony’s chip/sensor and entertainment technology divisions have achieved strong results. Overall, the company realized record sales of 11.5 trillion yen ($84.8 billion) and profits of 1.21 trillion yen ($8.9 billion) this year.
Sony’s accomplishments have undermined Microsoft, whose bid to merge with Activision was recently blocked by the UK on cloud gaming grounds. Microsoft claims it will challenge the decision.
Optimistic about PlayStation’s future, Sony continues to boost revenue and profits through innovative hardware, software, services, chips and entertainment products. With over 38 million PS5s sold, Sony is positioned for further growth and continued success in the global gaming market.
