Sonyâs PlayStaÂtion 5 (PS5) has now sold over 38.4 milÂlion units since its launch in 2020, cementÂing its staÂtus as the comÂpaÂnyâs most sucÂcessÂful gamÂing conÂsole. The PS5âs popÂuÂlarÂiÂty conÂtinÂues to grow, with Sony announcÂing a record 6.3 milÂlion units sold in the secÂond quarÂter of 2022, exceedÂing the 2 milÂlion units from the same periÂod last year.
As a result, Sony expects cumuÂlaÂtive PS5 sales for fisÂcal 2022 to reach an impresÂsive 19.1 milÂlion units, surÂpassÂing the iniÂtial foreÂcast of 18 milÂlion units.
While game sales and PlayStaÂtion NetÂwork subÂscribers have seen a slight decline, Sonyâs GamÂing & NetÂwork SerÂvices DiviÂsion sales have still increased subÂstanÂtialÂly from 665 bilÂlion yen to 1,730 bilÂlion yen. HowÂevÂer, operÂatÂing income decreased due to exchange rate changes.
Sony remains optiÂmistic about future growth, proÂjectÂing 7% highÂer revÂenue for fisÂcal 2023. The comÂpaÂny also anticÂiÂpates increased hardÂware sales, includÂing periphÂerÂals such as the upcomÂing PlayStaÂtion VR2.
In addiÂtion to gamÂing sucÂcess, Sonyâs chip/sensor and enterÂtainÂment techÂnolÂoÂgy diviÂsions have achieved strong results. OverÂall, the comÂpaÂny realÂized record sales of 11.5 trilÂlion yen ($84.8 bilÂlion) and profÂits of 1.21 trilÂlion yen ($8.9 bilÂlion) this year.
Sonyâs accomÂplishÂments have underÂmined Microsoft, whose bid to merge with ActiviÂsion was recentÂly blocked by the UK on cloud gamÂing grounds. Microsoft claims it will chalÂlenge the decision.
OptiÂmistic about PlayStaÂtionâs future, Sony conÂtinÂues to boost revÂenue and profÂits through innoÂvÂaÂtive hardÂware, softÂware, serÂvices, chips and enterÂtainÂment prodÂucts. With over 38 milÂlion PS5s sold, Sony is posiÂtioned for furÂther growth and conÂtinÂued sucÂcess in the globÂal gamÂing market.
