One person was killed and three injured in a shooting at a mall in El Paso, Texas, on Saturday. Dozens of people have already been killed in mass shootings across the country this year, but it adds to the ring.
El Paso police said the two men were in custody hours after the shooting, but details of what led to the shooting remained unclear.
Acting Police Chief Peter Pacillas said the Cielo Vista mall is still considered a crime scene and will remain closed until authorities complete an investigation.
Mr. Pacillas emphasized that the danger has passed.
“No more danger. Again, no more danger,” Pasillas said.
The shooting occurred across a busy street and large parking lot from Walmart, where 23 people were killed in a racist attack targeting Hispanics in 2019.
El Paso, with a population of about 700,000 mostly Latinos, sits on the US-Mexico border and is frequently visited by residents of both countries.
“Today’s shooting at Cielo Vista Mall brought back traumatic memories to many. El Paso Democratic Rep. Veronica Escobar tweeted, ‘Know you are not alone.’ Please keep it.”
