Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time world champion, is not only struggling to stay at the front of the F1 grid, but has also lost someone who has been central to his success so far. Hamilton is racing his second Grand Prix of the season in Saudi Arabia after battling for fifth place at the Bahrain Grand Prix earlier this month.

And while in Jeddah, he confirmed that he had dissolved his relationship with his physiotherapist and close friend, Angela Cullen. Hamilton has been open about how much he cares about the New Zealanders who have helped him since 2015.

The 48-year-old physiotherapist from France has since helped oversee six of Hamilton’s championship wins. And she herself has no shortage of qualifications in her sport, having played junior hockey in her country at international level and in 2006 she competed on the South American tour of cycling.

However, in an emotional Instagram post, she shared a photo of the two together, writing, “For the past seven years, Angela Karen has been by my side, pushing me to be the best version of myself. “I am a stronger athlete and a better person because of her.

“So today, I would like to ask everyone to pray for her to follow her dreams and take the next step. Thank you, Anne, for everything you have done. I look forward to your future success.”

Hamilton previously described Karen as “one of the best things that happened to me”, and the pair even got matching tattoos that read “Loyalty”. For a 38-year-old worried about his future in F1, the farewell could not have been worse.

The Mercedes driver is aiming for an eighth world title in history but is unlikely to win the title in 2023 as Silver Arrows are well behind Red Bull. The star then lashed out at Toto Wolff and his team for “not listening to him” about his concerns about the W14’s design.

And Friday’s first practice session in Saudi Arabia could hardly have made him feel better. Again, Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez dominated, with Hamilton sixth.
